Cadillac’s Unexpected Opportunity

Cadillac is the only team without a point so far — and here is why that could easily change this weekend.

They cannot expect a sudden surge of speed or some magical step forward, but they can certainly take full advantage of the bigger picture at the Spanish GP.

As expected, we have already seen multiple interruptions during F3 qualifying, while no fewer than five cars were out before the end of F2 qualifying.

Many experts believe there is little chance F1 will escape the same fate. Some team bosses and engineers even expect as many as 6–8 cars could fail to finish on Sunday.

And that creates a very interesting opportunity for Cadillac.

With two very experienced drivers, a Safety Car or red flag could easily put one of them into a points-scoring position.

So, the team’s main priority in Madrid is simple:

Stay out of trouble.

Avoid unnecessary risks and capitalise on everyone else’s mistakes and problems.

For Cadillac, this could be the perfect recipe for its first F1 points.

Will it work?

We’ll have to wait and see. 🏎️🏁

Tyre Questions in Madrid

As expected, track evolution at Madring is huge. Grip will continue to improve as the weekend progresses, and lap times should keep dropping — increasing the load on the tyres significantly.

Because of Lindblad’s off, no one managed a proper long run in FP2, but all teams reported unusual tyre difficulties.

The problem is not excessive wear, but thermal overload.

Especially through the very long, heavily banked La Monumental, the load on the front-left tyre is severe. Most engineers therefore expect tyre degradation to play a major role in determining the race strategy.

After Friday’s running, a one-stop strategy looks extremely unlikely, with two stops and a medium-hard combination currently appearing to be the preferred approach.

But with track evolution this extreme, tomorrow could tell a very different story. 🏎️

What Did We Learn Today at Madring?

After FP1 and FP2, one thing is already clear: qualifying at Madring is likely to be almost as important as it is in Monaco.

And just like a fast lap in Monaco requires drivers to run millimetres from the walls, Madring will demand full commitment — and substantial risk.

The track is also much bumpier than anyone expected, particularly through the fast T10–T12 sequence. That could make finding the right balance between speed and confidence extremely difficult.

Energy management is proving particularly tricky. Different deployment strategies were used in FP1, but by FP2 they had inevitably started to converge as teams learned from each other and constantly optimised their cars.

Now comes the big engineering trade-off.

Do you set the car up for maximum performance through the high-speed T12–T13 section? Or optimise it to get closer to the walls and attack the kerbs, particularly at Turns 5 and 7?

Knowing F1, the answer will probably be both — just in completely different ways.

Different teams are likely to pursue very different engineering concepts tonight, each looking for an advantage in opposite directions.

Qualifying promises to be full of surprises.

Let’s just hope most of them are positive… 🏎️🇪🇸
